Tirta Empul: Temple Tour with Optional Spiritual Cleansing

The spiritual cleansing was a truly unique experience. Our guide, John Karba, made the day even more meaningful with his deep knowledge and patient answers to all my questions about Bali. The tea and coffee tasting was quick, fun, and came with a great gift shop. I recommend starting early to avoid long lines at the temple—we went early, and it was perfect. My visit to Tirta Empul was truly wonderful, but it was our guide Tirta who made it unforgettable. He was so knowledgeable and shared so many interesting facts about Balinese culture—like the rule that no building can be taller than a coconut tree, and that “Tirta” means water, which is both his name and the temple’s! I also learned that out of Bali’s 4.8 million people, 3 million ride scooters. I had such an amazing experience and would absolutely return to do this tour again with Tirta, my fantastic guide.

Even in the rain, the temple is stunning. Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. She assisted us with the cleansing ritual, ensuring everything went perfectly. We chose the Polaroids, but because of the rain and cloudy skies, they came out a bit dark. Luckily, our guide took photos and videos with her phone, which were fantastic. This is a must-do activity, even if you decide not to take part in the cleansing.

I’m a 52-year-old woman traveling alone and booked the water temple trip. Mangku was my guide, and he is truly amazing—definitely ask for him. He was thoughtful, respectful, and generous in sharing his knowledge and insights. Our guide was very patient and kind. One thing to note is that this company operates on “Island time.” For those from the United States, this means that the person scheduled to meet you will arrive whenever they happen to get there, so punctuality isn’t guaranteed. Because of this, along with cold water and long lines, you should plan for a full, tiring day. For my husband and me, the whole experience lasted about four hours. Thankfully, we had no other plans afterward because we were exhausted—but it was a good kind of tired! Overall, the trip is definitely worth doing.
