From Istanbul to Troy: Relive the Tale of the Trojan Horse

For a day trip of this length, especially with the traffic, I think it offers excellent value. It’s a long and somewhat challenging day in a cramped bus, but it allowed me to finally see the places I’ve been curious about for 47 years since I first read The Iliad. I had the chance to stand where Priam, Hector, and Paris once defended Troy. The only thing I wish was different is that I couldn’t stand on the plain just south of the city walls, where the actual battles took place. That area is supposedly where Achilles and Hector fought their famous duel. I understand that it’s private farmland, but it would have been nice if there was a small path to get closer to the mound of the city and view it properly.

The service was professional and excellent. We were picked up on time and dropped back at our hotel without issue. I appreciated the stops for rest one for us and another for the driver. After lunch, we had fresh drivers for the trip to Troy and the return journey. The bus was comfortable with air conditioning, and the arrangements were well managed. The only downside was feeling a bit rushed through Troy by the guide, even with a bathroom break. Otherwise, the guide was knowledgeable and the experience was great.

The trip was good, but I underestimated the travel time to Troy. The driver wasn’t clear about the multiple stops, and we made more stops than I expected, which took away from our time at the site. I was also disappointed to find the Trojan Horse under restoration, which I wish I’d known beforehand. I felt a bit rushed through the sights due to time constraints. We booked a private tour, but were picked up with a group of 10 people, which was frustrating since we paid more. After complaining, we were separated in Gallipoli and had a great private guide, Eldar. On the return, we were put back on the same bus with the group. Despite the private tour in Troy, they initially refused to refund the extra money, but after explaining, they gave me a credit for the difference.

My husband really wanted to visit Troia, where a part of classical history unfolded. The trip took about 5 hours by van, plus a boat and bus ride. For him, it was worth it; for me, the long journey felt too much for a short visit. I’d recommend flying or staying overnight in the region, which is beautiful. Seeing the Dardanelles and imagining the Greek fleet passing by was a fascinating experience.
