We felt the tour could have been more enjoyable with a different guide. Ours seemed very tired, often dozing off in his seat and smoking frequently to stay alert. He shared only the bare minimum of information. That said, Izmir itself offers plenty to see and appreciate.

We chose Izmir as our base to visit the Ephesus ruins. However, our first impression was a bit overwhelming. The city is huge, busy and full of traffic and people. If you're not a fan of large cities like me, I’d suggest skipping Izmir or limiting your stay to just one day. For visiting Ephesus, staying in Selçuk is a better option. It’s a smaller, very charming town where you can unwind. Still, if you're after a more authentic and less tourist driven Turkish experience, Izmir does have something to offer.
