Meis or to give it it’s full Greek name, Kastellorizo, is a small island about 30 minutes by boat from Kas. If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then a quick boat trip is all you need to sample the exquisite peace and serenity of life out in the middle of the Mediterranean sea. It’s easy to spend a day here in full relaxation mode as you let you worries and cares float away. You can visit one of the area’s most amazing natural wonders in the blue cave, take a leisurely stroll up the mountain pass to explore the island’s castle or simply relax in the village and enjoy some of the freshest local dishes in Greece.
Meis actually translates as “biggest” which is quite strange as this is a tiny island. In fact there is only one bus and one taxi on the whole island. You book your Meis Island Ferry Ticket Online. You’ll then take a ferry over to the island that leaves every day at 10am and returns at 4pm. During the short journey of about half an hour, you’ll be able to get a fantastic view of the surrounding shoreline as well as get some good sun tan opportunities.
Once you arrive at Mais you’ll instantly be spell bound by the colourful boats that line the harbour and the pastel shaded houses and buildings that the island is famous for. It’s a photographer’s dream as you scan the vista that makes you think you are living in a postcard scene. The town itself is a typical island town, very laid back and relaxed. You can walk through the narrow streets enjoying this slow pace of island life or take a seat at a local taverna and sample some fresh seafood.
A popular activity for visitors is to take a boat to the local blue cave. This natural formation is a cave whereby the boat has to enter very slowly and you’ll need to lie flat to get through the opening. However once inside the cave opens up and is coloured by the pristine blue waters. It really is a sight to behold.
Before your boat trip back make sure to take the short walk up to the local castle to admire the views of the surrounding waters. The return ferry back to kas will take approximately half an hour and leaves at 4pm.
