Overview

Welcome to an unforgettable private walking tour through Prague’s WWII and Communist-era history, guided by a local expert with personal insights and captivating storytelling. Starting in the heart of Old Town, guests will follow in the footsteps of Czech resistance heroes and Communist dissidents alike.

In the first segment, you’ll explore sites connected to the Nazi occupation, including the Operation Anthropoid memorial and bitterly fought Prague Uprising locations. Your guide will illuminate the stakes of resistance and the high cost paid by civilians during this brutal chapter.

Next, you'll ascend the slopes of Vítkov Hill to the imposing National Monument, once home to Klement Gottwald’s mausoleum. Here, see the colossal statue of Jan Žižka and learn how the monument evolved into a propaganda tool under the Communist regime.

Descending toward Petřín Hill, pause at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism, a haunting row of decaying bronze statues symbolizing political oppression and resilience.

Throughout the tour, you’ll traverse Wenceslas Square, Národní Třída, and the Jewish Quarter, uncovering narratives of censorship, dissent, and the Velvet Revolution of 1989 that toppled Communist rule. Insights on the Prague Spring, Charter 77, and everyday life behind the Iron Curtain add depth and context.

From personal anecdotes about childhood under surveillance to the broader arc of Czech national transformation, this experience blends intimate storytelling with historical depth. By tour’s end, travelers will have gained a richly textured understanding of how Prague confronted tyranny and reclaimed freedom.

We gained a lot of insight into the events that took place, including the pre-war period and how everything eventually led to life under communism. We also picked up general knowledge about Prague while walking through many parts of the city.

The tour was really enjoyable! I didn’t find the film particularly engaging, as Dana’s explanations were already very clear, and the content in the movie felt a bit repetitive. Aside from that, it was an excellent overview of Prague’s modern history. Many thanks!

My husband, our adult son, and I spent several hours with Martin, who had an impressive knowledge of Czech history. He helped us piece together the country's journey from before World War I all the way to the present. He patiently answered all our numerous questions and guided us through parts of the city marked by powerful historical events or places where courageous locals made a lasting impact. We learned about Reinhard Heydrich, known as the “Butcher of Prague,” and Milada Horáková’s remarkable resistance to communism. Prague is filled with symbols and monuments that not only reflect its history but also pay tribute to the brave individuals who brought about change. This tour gave us a deeper understanding of that side of Prague.
