Overview

Discover the fascinating history and culture of the Jewish Quarter (Josefov) in Prague on a guided walking tour that offers an in-depth look into the area's rich Jewish heritage and its modern-day significance. Your expert guide will provide a thorough overview of the quarter's history, introducing you to its landmarks, and sharing stories of Prague’s Jewish community, including its most notable figures.

The tour begins at the Maisel Synagogue, located at Maiselova 5, where you’ll meet your guide. From here, you will walk through the heart of Josefov, the Jewish Quarter, which is home to a number of significant cultural and historical sites. As you explore, your guide will share insightful stories about the Jewish community, their historical contributions to Prague, and the impact of historical events on their lives and traditions.

As part of the tour, you will visit several of the most important synagogues in Prague, each with its own unique history and architectural style. The Maisel Synagogue, the Pinkas Synagogue, the Spanish Synagogue, and the Old New Synagogue are all part of the itinerary, each offering a glimpse into the rich spiritual and cultural legacy of Prague’s Jewish community. Your guide will provide fascinating commentary about the significance of each synagogue, as well as stories that bring the history of the Jewish Quarter to life.

A key highlight of the tour is the visit to the Old Jewish Cemetery, one of the oldest and most historically significant Jewish cemeteries in Central Europe. As you walk through this somber yet beautiful site, your guide will explain the history behind the tombstones, many of which date back to the 15th century, and share stories of the prominent individuals buried here.

Throughout the tour, your guide, an expert in the Jewish history of Prague, will offer detailed insights into the history, culture, and people of the Jewish Quarter. Their stories and explanations will help you understand the challenges and triumphs faced by Prague’s Jewish community through the centuries, and provide a deeper connection to the landmarks and history that shape the area today.

Please note that appropriate attire is required when entering the synagogues, as they are places of worship. Visitors should ensure they are dressed modestly, with covered arms, shoulders, and abdomen. Swimwear and footwear are not permitted inside the synagogues.

This guided walking tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich Jewish history of Prague, a city whose Jewish community has shaped the course of its past and continues to influence its present. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply looking to learn more about this fascinating neighborhood, this tour is an unforgettable way to experience one of Prague's most important cultural districts.

The tour was both powerful and emotional. Our guide provided us with a wealth of information, along with helpful suggestions for other sites to explore. We gained deep insights into the historical and political developments from the 12th century through to today. If given the chance, we would gladly take the same tour again just as it was.

The tour was well structured and engaging. Our guide did an excellent job of walking us through the history of the ghetto, the evolution of the Jewish community in Prague, their hardships especially the poignant moment in the synagogue where the names of those deported by the Nazis are read and their connection to their faith. The visit to the old Jewish cemetery, paired with the guide’s thorough explanation, was also particularly fascinating. The guide was informed, respectful, and stayed with us attentively the entire time. Truly well done!

I learned so much about both Prague’s history and Jewish culture. The guide was kind, insightful, and incredibly generous with their time and knowledge. I truly felt privileged to be part of this tour. Thank you again!

We had a fantastic guide who introduced us not only to the Jewish Quarter but also to the Jewish faith. She patiently answered all our questions about Prague, including those beyond the tour’s scope. She even stayed longer than planned to share as much information as possible. Unfortunately, I can’t recall her first name, but I’d like to express my gratitude once again.

I didn’t learn a great deal during the tour. The guide spoke very softly, which made it difficult to hear, especially since all the sites were crowded and noisy. We were lucky to be in a small group; with more people, it would have been overwhelming. I wouldn’t recommend this tour during the busy tourist season. If you must visit then, a self guided tour might be better so you can read the exhibit information at your own pace.

Audio headsets would greatly improve the experience. With many tour groups nearby, everyone is talking over each other, and the guide has to compete with city noise. Using headsets would make it much easier to listen while walking around the museum and viewing the exhibits the guide is discussing.

Our guide was excellent. Although we occasionally had trouble understanding her, that wasn’t her fault. It was a hot and crowded day, and I found the first part at the initial synagogue a bit too detailed and lengthy. A more concise history would have been easier to absorb. The tour did run longer than expected, but it was informative and definitely worth it.
