Do British need a visa for Turkey?

Every year lots of British tourists come to enjoy the sunshine, beaches and fascinating historical sites of Turkey. As with citizens of the US and some other European countries, British citizens need to obtain a visa, but don’t let that put you off enjoying a holiday in this beautiful country. Nowadays it’s very simple and easy.

Get a visa without leaving the house.

You can get a tourist visa without even leaving your home, just login to www.evisa.gov.tr and voila, your visa will be ready in just 3 minutes! It’s better to use the official government website because other websites may charge more and some have been known to issue fake e-Visas. You just need a British passport that is valid for at least 6 months as from the date you arrive in Turkey.

You can buy a visa online using your Visa, Mastercard or other type of debit or credit card. A tourist visa is valid for up to 90 days in total during a 180 day period, so you can come and go as you please. The visa costs $36.05 (which includes a $1.05 service fee). You can obtain your visa as early as 3 months in advance and you should get it at least 48 hours before you travel. It is recommended that you print out a copy of your e-visa or have a copy on your smartphone to show at ports of entry just in case there is a problem. If you are going with a travel company, they may obtain your visa for you.

What if I’m going on a cruise?

Cruise ship passengers don’t need a visa as long as they don’t spend more than 72 hours in Turkey during any one visit. If you are a British citizen on a cruise, you can get off at any of the ports and explore the city, do some shopping or see the sights as long as you’re back on the ship within 72 hours.

Do I have to buy a visa online?

No, if you don’t have internet access or would prefer to apply to your local Turkish consulate or embassy they will be happy to arrange the visa for you.

What if I don’t have a British passport?

If you don’t have a full British passport, you will need to contact your local Turkish consulate or embassy to find out what documents are required. You should also contact your tour operator to check that your documents are acceptable. Emergency Travel Documents are accepted as long as they are valid for 6 months as from the date you enter Turkey.

Turkey welcomes British tourists.

In April 2013 the e-Visa system was introduced to make it easier for British and other tourists to enjoy a holiday in Turkey. When you arrive in Turkey, you will experience the warmth and hospitality of the local people. Turkey is waiting for you!
