I mainly wanted to visit Dahshur and wasn't particularly interested in Memphis. We requested a change in itinerary to avoid wasting time by skipping Memphis, and that was no problem. We even requested to be dropped off in downtown Cairo instead of our hotel, which they did at no extra charge. Our tour guide gave us plenty of time to explore Dahshur and recommended some unique tombs to visit in Memphis. Everything was fascinating. Transportation was first class, and the service was consistently excellent.

Visiting Sakkara and Dahshur is definitely worthwhile, especially as they are home to the oldest pyramids. It's fascinating to observe the evolution from the step pyramid to the leaning pyramid and then to the first true triangular pyramid. Memphis was also impressive, especially the colossal statue of Ramses II. Lunch at a local restaurant was delicious. Both the driver and guide were friendly, and having a female guide was a welcome change. The only downside was a disagreement between the tour operator and the guide, which delayed us by an hour.

At first, it was a bit frustrating that you can only book private tours in Egypt. I understand how things work there, but it's not always pleasant to embark on a tour without knowing your guide beforehand. You usually have a driver, and a good guide can alleviate some awkward moments, but it would have been nice to have a shared tour option, especially for a full day excursion. However, the tour itself was fine. My guide was entertaining and very knowledgeable. The itinerary seemed a bit rushed, especially at lunch, which was delicious falafel, bought from a roadside vendor and eaten in the car. This may be standard for these tours, but I would have appreciated a bit more time. We also stopped twice: once at a papyrus workshop and once at a perfume factory. While both places were interesting, they felt like blatant sales pitches and a waste of time I would have spent exploring other places.
