When should I go to Cappadocia?

Turkey is known for all-inclusive resorts and coastal cities, but the must-see places like ancient cities, historical treasures and natural wonders are located in the Cappadocia region. This area gives you a fairytale feeling with rocks in the form of pointed hats, underground towns, cave churches, and hidden valleys.

Cappadocia National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been declared one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. Read more if you would like to know what you can do in Cappadocia.

What is the best timer to travel to Cappadocia ?

The best travel time to the Cappadocian region in Turkey is from May to September. You will have a pleasant, warm temperature and hardly any rain. The highest average temperature in Cappadocia is 28°C in July and the lowest is 3°C in January. The weather and climate of Cappadocia are suitable for a sunny holiday in summer.

Must-sees of Cappadocia

In addition to underground cities and beautiful rock formations, Cappadocia also offers other attractions and activities. Some of the things you should see and do are:

Fly in a hot air balloon

The most popular activity in and around Cappadocia in Nevsehir is still the hot air balloon ride. The duration of the ride is between 1 hour and 1.5 hours and different theme packages are offered. You can choose to participate early in the morning, where you see the sunrise or in the evening when the sun goes down. The tour is not 100% guaranteed, because of the wind and weather conditions.

The open-air museum of Cappadocia

Approximately 1.5 kilometers outside the village of Göreme you will find a large monastery complex in this museum. Here you can see many churches with Byzantine architecture carved in rocks.

Hiking and trekking

The mountainous moon landscape of Cappadocia has surprisingly enough green meadows where you can enjoy walking among the wildflowers. The world-famous Love Valley is on the way to the open-air museum of Goreme. In the Love Valley, there is a panoramic spot where you have a good view of the valley and the balloons. This is also the place where some balloons take off or land. You’ll find a lot fewer people here than on the hill in Goreme.

Pigeon Valley

This valley owes its name to the hundreds of pigeon houses that have been carved out of the rocks. Everywhere you see pigeons flying. A beautiful sight! Some houses are even painted white to attract as many pigeons as possible. The residents did this because the pigeon poop was used as a kind of manure for the farmers.

Dervish Dancing Performance

The love for the creator and his creation is expressed in the dance of the Dervish. The dancers turn from right to left with one hand raised to the creator and the other turned towards the earth. The whirling Dervishes show is an amazing performance to witness.
