Side (pronounced See-deh), on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, is well worth a visit. Its name is derived from the ancient Roman city of Side. Once a sleepy village, it’s now buzzing with tourists for most of the year except winter. Apart from the fascinating Hellenistic and Roman ruins, there are white sandy beaches lined with bars and restaurants and a variety of lodgings, from homely bed and breakfast accommodation to the bigger luxury hotels. There’s something to suit every budget. If you like sightseeing, the best time to wander around the ruins would be spring or autumn, when it’s not too hot. Summer is very busy with local tourists at the weekend so it’s best to avoid the beaches at these times.
The nearest airport to Side is the international airport belonging to Antalya, one of Turkey’s largest cities and the tourism capital. The airport is located on the east side of Antalya. The city lies 55 km (35 miles) to the west of Side. It has several large shopping malls, beaches, the old city with Hadrian’s gate and beautiful waterfalls. The airport is very modern with lots of shops, exchange offices, banks, restaurants and cafes. There are lots of economical flight deals from the UK and Europe to Antalya. Some flights are direct while others go via Istanbul. Antalya AYT airport has two international terminals and one domestic terminal to accommodate the millions of foreign and Turkish tourists who flood into Turkey’s southern coast each summer.
